BOYS' GOLF: Chargers' Debosky earns medalist honors; CBA takes team portion

Eyes ahead.

That was the mantra this week for the Charles B. Aycock varsity golf team, which began preparation in earnest for next month's eastern 3-A regional championship by playing consecutive matches and logging some 125 miles of travel in a 24-hour span -- a jaunt that left many Falcons weary at the finish line of Thursday's match at Lane Tree Golf Club.

The powder blues rallied spent energy, however, filing a team mark of 326 to finish first on a leaderboard that included league member Eastern Wayne, as well as contingents from Goldsboro, Wayne Country Day and Rosewood.

Aycock was paced by senior Jake Flowers, whose fairway-and-green inspired 79 included a 2-over-par 38 along the inward half. His play over the 6,433-yard layout was complemented by Ty Daniels (81), Bryce Jones (83) and Carl Floars, whose also signed for an 83.

"Just got it in the fairway, got it near the green... and got it in," Flowers said of his effort.

Eastern Wayne was led by Noah Forrester, who carded an 87. Also counting for the Warriors were Justin Whaley (95), Justin Edwards (99) and Dominic Cmarik, who carded a 122.

Goldsboro was anchored by sophomore Ryan Kimble, who fashioned an 87 on the afternoon. He was joined by Reid Barnett (104), Bryce Garner (110) and Daniel Dunn (124).

Medalist honors were secured by Wayne Country Day's Mitch Debosky, whose round of 76 included nines of 39-37. Bound for the University of Notre Dame in the fall, the senior recorded 14 pars and four bogeys on the day.

The Chargers, ranked third in the most recent N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll, also recorded a round of 96 from Joey Democko, a 100 by freshman Kelly Lewis and a 104 by Kenneth Wiggins.

Rosewood, which entered just two competitors, counted a round of 98 from Noah Grantham and a 113 from sophomore Dawson Overby.

In the scoring area post-round, a pensive Flowers reflected on a taxing span that saw higher-than-normal scoring from the Falcons, who will defend their regional title on May 2 at Lane Tree.

"We're in a little slump, but we're going to be fine," the senior noted. "Get Spring break off, and I'm sure everyone will play every day -- I'm not worried, especially being out here."
