SALEM, Va. -- Power and defense was on display Sunday afternoon as the Down East Wood Ducks defeated Salem, 9-3, and claimed the season-opening Carolina League series 3-1.
The Woodies (3-1 overall) play their first-ever home game in franchise history today against Winston-Salem. First pitch is 7:05 p.m. at historic Grainger Stadium in Kinston.
Home runs from Luis Mendez and Josh Altmann allowed the Woodies to distance themselves from the Red Sox in the middle innings. Down East played error-free defense.
Brady Feigl provided 22/3 innings of one-run relief and earned the mound win.
