Keyniya Brown stepped into the passing zone and handed the baton off to Southern Wayne teammate Machiah Moore.

Moore headed into the first turn less than 20 meters behind Charles B. Aycock junior Arlanda Faulkner. Cheered on by her teammates as they ran through the infield, Moore passed Faulker midway on the backstretch -- in front of her flock of Golden Falcon teammates.

Seconds later she crossed the finish line.

"My race!" Moore yelled.

Indeed.

The Saints seized their second straight 1,600-meter relay crown during the 2017 Wayne County Track and Field Championships ran at Rosewood HS on Monday afternoon. SW has captured five of the last six 1,600 titles overall since 2012.

One race still remained.

And a senior wasn't about to let victory slip from his talons.

Southern Wayne held the early advantage during the boys' 1,600 relay, but fell off the pace during its third baton exchange. Part of the Saints coaching staff groaned, while some questioned the lineup change which occurred among the runners.

Rosewood and Aycock, meanwhile, staged a classic finish.

The Eagles' anchor leg, Montonio Wheeler, took the handoff as an Aycock runner almost got tangled up with SW. The slight hiccup gave Wheeler just the margin he needed to keep a 10-meter cushion and lead RHS to its third consecutive 1,600 relay championship and fourth overall since 2010.

"That's a two-time state champion, boy!" yelled a teammate as he rushed Wheeler after he crossed the finish line.

CBA - led by Trevor Holt, Deshawn Owens and Kamarion Graham - retained its boys' team title with a 166-144 decision over Rosewood. The trio combined to place first in six individual events.

Eastern Wayne captured the 400 relay for the second straight year and amassed 129 points. Southern Wayne (60 points), Wayne Country Day (37), Goldsboro (33) and Spring Creek (30) rounded out the seven-team field.

A returning state qualifier, Holt emerged victorious in the shot put (48 feet, 8 inches) and discus (152-1). The senior has a total of four WCTF championships - the most by any Golden Falcon in field-event competition since 2009.

Owens became the third different CBA runner to win the half-mile run (800 meters) in 2 minutes, 13 seconds since 2009. John Parrish won a year ago and Cade Ivey was a three-time champ from 2010-12. Owens claimed the one-mile run in 4:44.

Sprinter Kamarion Graham grabbed the 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 10.86 and 22.73, respectively.

Aycock successfully defended its 3,200 relay title and won the 800 relay.

The Warriors' Yeonte Royal topped out at six feet in the high jump and posted a distance of 21-2 in the long jump. Teammate William Smith grabbed first in the triple jump (42-8). The duo has qualified for the east 3-A regional.

Rosewood's tandem of Alex Godwin and Hayden Maldonado logged first-place times in the 110 hurdles and 3,200 run, respectively. Fellow Eagle Tanner Smith repeated as the pole vault champion.

SW's Tashawn Phillips took the 300 hurdles.

Eastern Wayne's Amari Brigman, to no one's surprise, continued her season-long domination in the field events.

She stepped into the discus circle and heaved a meet-winning toss of 108 feet, 1/2-inches. About 30 minutes later, she sauntered over to the shot put area and dropped a first-place throw of 35 feet, 4 inches.

Brigman is now a four-time WCTF champ.

Teammate Rayven Smith won the high jump. Sharadiant Hamilton repeated as the 300 hurdles champion. The Warriors displayed their speed and talent while winning the 400 and 800 relays.

"Amari had a good meet with her performance in the discus," EW head coach Aaron Lynch said. "Overall, I thought we ran well. There are still areas where we need to concentrate on to prepare for the conference, regional and state tournaments."

Like Brigman, the Golden Falcons' Cyerra Carter joined the four-time WCTF club with a first-place leap in the long jump. Arlanda Faulkner took the triple jump and surprised the 100-meter hurdles field with a meet-winning time of 17.32 seconds. The lanky junior started practicing hurdle events a week ago.

Sarah Gregory, despite the 70-degree temps, ran two distance events. She won the 800 and finished second with a personal-best time in the 1,600.

"I believed our team performed very well this afternoon," first-year CBA head coach Joseph O'tellio said. "We did have a few injuries that required us to make sudden changes, however, our leader on the team stepped up when we needed (her) and picked up the slack.

"Karah Long and Caitlyn Frazier gave an awesome performance."

Southern Wayne became the fourth different team since 2009 to win the girls' 3,200 relay. The Saints, of course, concluded the meet with a heart-stopping victory in the 1,600 relay.

Takeitha Glaspie overtook the field in both the 100 dash (12.61 seconds) and 200 dash (26.05). Elvia Morales won the 3,200 in 16:26.

"I'm very pleased with the girls' overall effort," SW head coach Takisha Vann said. "(I) saw some runners come into their rhythm today as well as a few surprises. (It) seemed like we had girls to place in almost each event and that is positive going into the remainder of the season."

Rosewood's Miyah McCall won the 400 in 1:03.4.
