UMO BASEBALL: Trojans sweep Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. -- Justin Carroll swatted a home run Saturday afternoon and No. 4-ranked University of Mount Olive earned a three-game series sweep -- 5-2, 9-0, 10-4 -- over Conference Carolinas foe Southern Wesleyan.

Carroll ended the game 1-for-2 with two RBI, two walks and two runs scored as the Trojans rose to 19-2 against league opposition this season.

Jose Lopez (RBI) and David Mayo (two RBI) contributed two hits apiece. Ricky Surum, designated hitter Jason Smith (three RBI) and Tony Salvaggio each provided one hit. Surum and Drew Ellis each had a stolen base.

Brighton Hudson (6-1) permitted three earned runs on three walks and five hits, and retired six SWC batters on strikeouts in 4-plus innings of work. Zach Vennaro, German Reyes and Trey Pate combined to throw 41/3 innings of two-hit, five-strikeout relief.

Game 2 -- Austin Hutchison threw a complete-game four-hitter in Saturday's opener. His line -- five strikeouts, seven flyouts and nine groundouts.

Surum emerged as the offensive leader with two hits and two RBI in four at-bats. Zach Mozingo (RBI), Lopez, Smith (RBI), Mayo (two RBI), Carroll (RBI) and Jack Sherrill (RBI) each had one hit.

Game 1 -- Mozingo picked up his team- and conference-leading 10th save of the season on Friday evening. The right-hander held SWC scoreless and logged two strikeouts during his two-inning stint on the bump.

Bruce Zimmerman (7-1) started and recorded an eye-popping 17 strikeouts. SWC scratched out two earned runs on two hits and two walks. Ethan Horne appeared in middle relief before Mozingo departed the outfield to take over the mound.

Surum delivered a two-hit, three-RBI performance. Sherrill contributed two hits. Mozingo and Lopez (RBI) each connected on a hit.

Mount Olive (33-7 overall) returns home Tuesday for a battle against in-state Southeast Region foe Catawba.
