BASEBALL: Wood Ducks rally in dramatic fashion

SALEM, Va. -- Jairo Beras' home run capped a ninth-inning comeback as the Down East Wood Ducks launched their inaugural season with a 7-6 victory over Salem in the Carolina League opener for both teams Thursday.
The first four Wood Ducks -- Josh Morgan, Frandy De La Rosa, Josh Altmann and Chuck Moorman -- reached safely to start the ninth. Altmann plated Morgan, while Moorman knocked in De La Rosa with a double down the third-base line.
Two strikeouts later, Michael O'Neill and La O each fought off two-strike pitch counts and connected on singles to keep the comeback alive.Eduard Pinto's eight-pitch at-bat set the table for Beras' heroics.
Down East entered the ninth inning 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Salem led 6-0 through seven innings before Down East got a solo home run from Luis La O with one out in the eighth. The Cuban ended the night 2-for-5.
Ricardo Rodriguez retired the side in order to secure the win.
The teams continue their series today.
