Conner Pate secured a comeback win at No. 6 singles and Goldsboro blanked North Lenoir, 9-0, in an Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference match contested on the John Allen Farfour Courts at Herman Park on a breezy Thursday afternoon.
Hawks sophomore Matt Riddick defeated Pate 6-2 in the opening set. But the Goldsboro freshman worked his way back into the match, winning the second set 6-2 and super tiebreaker 15-13.
Sam DeAraujo, Xan Pate, Caleb Whitted, Aaron Podbielski and Holdens Jones each collected a singles point. Whitted-Xan Pate and Jones-DeAraujo each emerged victorious in doubles.
The Cougars' third-seeded doubles team won 8-4.
One day earlier, Goldsboro defeated ECC foe Greene Central 6-3.
Whitted-Pate rolled to an 8-1 decision over the Rams' Brandon Gilbert-Paul Miller. The second-seeded tandem of Jones-DeAraujo doubled up GC's Nailah Ortega-Cameron Beamon 8-4.
The teams played three third-set tiebreakers in singles.
Jones, a senior, walked away a victor at the No. 5 flight with a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3) conquest of Drake Robart. Teammates DeAraujo, Pate and Whitted each dominated in straight-set fashion at their respective flights for the Cougars.
GC won tiebreakers at Nos. 4 and 6 singles.
Goldsboro (8-1 overall, 4-0 ECC) is the guest of North Johnston next Tuesday.
