SOFTBALL: Lyon 'goes yard' in Cougars' mercy-rule win

Matti Rose Lyon mashed her first career home run, and Goldsboro handed Rocky Mount a 20-7, mercy-rule loss Thursday afternoon.
Lyon ended the day 1-for-3 with five RBI and three runs scored.
Riley Howell (two RBI), Dakota Jones (two RBI), Amber Pfennig (two RBI) and Abby Allen (RBI) each posted a three-hit outing. Grace Tart batted 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Nikki Olmsted (RBI), Marcy Taylor (RBI) and Addie Shirley (RBI) each had one hit.
The Cougars were thieves on the diamond with a single-game school-record 12 stolen bases. Howell had a career-high four steals. Jones swiped three bags. Pfennig and Allen each had two steals, while Shirley had one.
Taylor earned the win inside the circle. She surrendered seven earned runs on seven hits, walked seven and struck out seven.
