COLLEGE BASEBALL: Trojans sweep arch rival Barton

MOUNT OLIVE -- Nationally-ranked University of Mount Olive stayed unbeaten on the Conference Carolinas baseball scene with a weekend series sweep of arch rival Barton College at Scarborough Field.

The Trojans, ranked No. 14 in the latest Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division II poll, took the opener 8-7 in walk-off fashion Friday evening. Austin Hutchinson threw a six-hit gem in game two, a 3-0 shutout.

Drew Ellis swatted a solo home run and Ricky Surum banged out three hits as UMO completed the sweep with a 9-2 victory in game three.

Tied at 7-7 through 81/2 innings in game one, Nate Estes started the Trojans' rally with a lead-off walk. Tony Salvaggio was hit by a pitch and Zach Mozingo legged out a bunt single to load the sacks.

Jose Lopez coaxed a four-pitch walk from BC reliever Justin Evans to score Estes for the game-winning run. Lopez provided two hits and four RBI in three official at-bats in a reserve role.

Mozingo (1-0) claimed the mound win with three innings of one-hit, four-strikeout relief. He pitched behind starter Bruce Zimmerman, who permitted six runs (three earned) on five hits and fanned nine Barton batters.

However, UMO committed two errors.

Hutchinson was virtually untouchable during the first game of Saturday's twinbill. He sent nine Bulldogs back to the dugout on strikeouts during his 124-pitch outing.

David Mayo (3-for-3) and Justin Lee combined for two RBI. Ricky Surum and Drew Ellis provided two hits apiece.

UMO pounded BC starter Dylan Ward for seven runs in the first two innings. Ward was victimized by a Bulldogs defense that committed four errors behind him.

Ellis, Surum, Mayo and Lee combined for seven of the Trojans' eight hits and a total of eight RBI in game three.Trae Sweeting added a base knock and stole two bases.

Surum swiped three bases.

Brighton Hudson (2-0) limited the Bulldogs to one earned run and filed eight strikeouts in a seven-inning stint. Zach Vennaro provided one inning of two-hit, two-strikeout relief.

Horne tossed a scoreless ninth.

Mount Olive (15-4 overall, 6-0 CC) extended its win streak to eight and is now 13-1 at home this season. The Trojans entertain in-state region foe Wingate on next Tuesday and Wednesday.
