Baseball

MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mount Olive opened its Conference Carolinas campaign with a weekend sweep Emmanuel (Ga.) College at Scarborough Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans won 10-3, 3-0 and 16-2.

Bruce Zimmerman (3-0) tossed a five-hitter and retired five Lions on strikeouts during a seven-inning stint in Friday's opener.

Ricky Surum batted 2-for-3 with five RBI, including a two-run home run. Zach Mozingo drove in teammate David Mayo for the Trojans' first run of the game.

Drew Ellis belted a game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the fourth. UMO tacked on multiple runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings.

Surum, Mayo and Jack Sherrill provided the offense in Saturday's first game. Surum ended the day 2-for-3.

Austin Hutchinson (3-0) threw a complete-game five-hitter and posted six shutouts.

The Trojans swatted a pair of first-inning home runs in game three. Gunner Tolston nailed a three-run shot, while Mozingo cranked a solo homer.

Surum went 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Ethan Horne (1-1) emerged as the winning pitcher with 22/3 innings of relief work out of the bullpen.

The Trojans (10-4 overall, 3-0 CC) entertain Lake Erie (Ohio) on Monday and visit in-state rival St. Augustine's on Tuesday.

Indoor track

HIGH POINT -- A total of 14 University of Mount Olive indoor track and field athletes -- men and women -- earned first-team all-Conference Carolinas honors during the season-ending meet ran on the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.

Leah Hanle earned two awards -- conference athlete-of-the-year and freshman-of-the-year. She scored 28 points with wins in both the 5,000-meter run and mile run, and a runner-up effort in the 3,000.

Tedric Shannon was the freshman-of-the-year on the men's side. He amassed 18 points with 400-meter dash victory, and runner-up finish in the 4x4 relay.

Matt van Lierop was selected as the men's coach-of-the-year.

MEN -- Brady Deaner, Daniel Francken, Guillermo Matesanz. WOMEN -- Alexis McNeil, Bailee Henry, Malak Kafi, Mictasha Mickle, Taylor Moncrief, Tunisia Prince.
