PIKEVILLE -- Tangela Faulkner saw it coming.

Her Charles B. Aycock team never made the adjustment.

Eastern Wayne -- again -- pulled the "four corners" offense out of its playbook cruised past its county rival, 42-32, in the Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference regular-season finale for both teams Thursday.

Mookie Powell's 3-pointer closed the gap to 31-24 toward end the of the third quarter. Cassandra Lassiter's 3-ball pulled the Golden Falcons within 31-24 barely 30 seconds into the final quarter.

Warriors head coach Michael Gurganus called for the stall tactic.

"Fortunately, we were able to attack (the basket) and get some open looks, and once we got a decent enough lead I knew they were in the zone and I wanted to pull them out," Gurganus said. "We were hoping it would work."

Rayna Gibson converted two backdoor layups and Nyesha Best dished off twice to twin sister Myesha, who cashed in two layups as the Warriors pulled away for the win.

Faulkner lamented her team's inability to pressure the guards and trap at midcourt. CBA's post players struggled to defend the basket.

"They got some good open shots," Faulkner said. "I don't know, we didn't play like we normally play. At the end of the day, I told them to go out there and have fun. It's OK. We'll get back up from this."

Sophomore guard Nyesha Best led all scorers with 15 points, including a 5 of 7 effort from the free throw line. Treycie Ford contributed nine points, followed by Dejah Thompson with six.

Lassiter and Lexi Edmundson paced CBA with 11 and eight points respectively.

The teams meet again Monday in New Hope for an opening-game in the ECC tournament. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
