Boy's basketball

C.B. Aycock 50,

Rosewood 43

* PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock head coach Dave Elmore called a timeout when Rosewood gained control of Friday night's game.

Wasting no time, Elmore got into the faces of his players and audibly screamed, "Wake up! Wake up! Show some intensity!"

The terse pep talk was thunderous enough for his players to gather the message. Heck, even the fans in the bleachers got the memo.

Sparked by Elmore's tirade, CBA dominated the second quarter and clinched a tight 50-43 win versus the Eagles.

"Their response was great," Elmore said. "I had to do something there because we started off lackadaisical...(Rosewood) puts us in a funk there at the beginning of the game. So I needed to do something to wake us up."

The Eagles resorted to the old Princeton offense -- a lull-you-to-sleep back-door cut scheme. Crisp passes were made from the top of the key to corresponding players charging to the basket.

The effortless flow gave Rosewood an early 14-8 advantage.

"The ball movement was good," Eagles head coach Daniel Mitchell said. "Defensively in our zone I thought we did a good job of rebounding the basketball and a good job of contesting shots."

The same could not be said for RHS in the second quarter.

Aycock limited Rosewood to just four points in the second frame, and sprinted to a 19-16 halftime advantage. CBA's burst heading into the locker room proved significant as the Golden Falcons' never relinquished their lead in the second half.

CBA closed out the game by outscoring Rosewood 17-12.

"I tried a different combination," Elmore said. "Put some different guys in to see if that would change it up a little bit and they did. I told the guys in the locker room that our execution late in the game was way better than it had been."

Eli Batts led the Golden Falcons with 20 points and Semaj Yelverton chipped in 10. Chance Howard recorded 18 points for Rosewood.

Elmore, now in his third year as coach, began 0-11 his first year and 0-5 his second year. The Golden Falcons are 3-4 this season and showing the progress that Elmore always anticipated.

"We're a young team and we're just now starting to play together a lot," Elmore said. "And by the end of the season, we should be where we want to be. We're way ahead of where we have been. So we're making that progress and closing the gap."

Princeton 53,

North Johnston 50

* KENLY -- Princeton scored the last six points of the game and knocked off county archrival North Johnston, 53-50, on Friday evening.

North Johnston rallied from a 36-26 deficit to take a 50-47 lead before the Bulldogs staged a comeback of their own.

Colby Sullivan paced Princeton's offensive attack with 18 points. Austin Sullivan chipped in 15 points, followed by Earl Gibson Jr. with eight. Ryan Woodard knocked down six points.

The Bulldogs launch their Carolina 1-A Conference season at home Tuesday against James Kenan.

North Duplin 59,

Lejeune 58

* JACKSONVILLE -- Luke Britt filed a 15-point performance as North Duplin squeezed out a 59-58, non-conference victory over Lejeune on Friday evening.

Terrion Addison added 13 points for the Rebels, who evened their worksheet at 1-1 overall this season. Schmid Romeus and Malik Cobb knocked down nine points apiece.

Chase King (six points), Ricky Cameron (five points) and Benson Jones (two points) also scratched in the scoring column.

North Duplin entertains East Duplin on Tuesday.

Wayne Country Day 79, Ridgecroft 39

* AHOSKIE -- Cole Atwood emerged as one of five players in double figures with 15 points, and Wayne Country Day dispatched non-conference foe Ridgecroft, 79-39.

Jamal King contributed 12 points. John Strickland flirted with a double-double -- 11 points, eight rebounds. Flashy guard Jimmie Sanders registered 10 points, seven assists and five steals.

The Chargers (5-5 overall) entertain Crossroads Christian on Tuesday.

Goldsboro Heat 64, Durham 45

* Gavin Portela just missed a double-double with 25 points and eight rebounds during the Goldsboro Heat's 64-45 conquest of Durham Flight on the W.A. Foster Center hardwood Friday evening.

Portela also passed out six assists.

Harman Kaler logged 12 points, six rebounds and five assists. Joe Rasmussen tossed in nine points.

Goldsboro (5-4 overall) plays host to Wilmington on Monday.

Girls' basketball

Eastern Wayne 69, Goldsboro 52

* You want an up-tempo game?

Take on Eastern Wayne.

The Warriors seized a nine-point lead barely 1 1/2 minutes into their contest with county rival Goldsboro on Friday evening, and cruised to a 69-52 victory inside venerable Norvell T. Lee Gym.

"In a game like this it was great, was very pivotal," EW head coach Michael Gurganus said of his team's blistering start. "Any time your team comes out and shoots like that, that's a joy to watch as a coach.

"I wanted our intensity level to go. Obviously, you want that to go up every game. I want our defense to be better and I want us to attack more on offense...shoot more on offense."

Eastern Wayne coaxed Goldsboro into 21 turnovers and owned an 11-1 advantage from behind the 3-point arc.

Treycie Ford, one of the area's most-underrated players, and Nyesha Best combined to drain four 3-pointers during the Warriors' game-opening 13-4 run. The hot shooting cooled off, but the Cougars (2-4 overall) couldn't answer on the offensive end.

Goldsboro struggled to finish around the basket.

The speedy Warriors (6-0) grabbed the rebound, pushed the ball upcourt and converted -- at times -- uncontested layups as the Cougars struggled in transition.

"If it's there, I want to run," Gurganus said.

Nyesha Best pumped in a game-high 22 points for EW, followed by Myesha Best and Ford with 11 points apiece. Dejah Thompson wiped the boards for 14 rebounds.

Tziah Kelly knocked down 22 points for Goldsboro. Destiny Lucas added 11. Makayla Roberts contributed nine points, 15 rebounds and a game-high six blocked shots.

Ikenya King pulled down 16 rebounds and blocked three shots.

Spring Creek 50, Jones Senior 19

* SEVEN SPRINGS -- Destiney Sutton pumped in a game-high 24 points during Spring Creek's 50-19, non-conference dismantling of Jones Senior at "The Swamp" on Friday evening.

Sutton pulled down five rebounds and picked the Trojans for seven steals.

Belinda Carson collected seven points, eight rebounds, five steals and three blocked shots.

Lejeune 45, North Duplin 28

* JACKSONVILLE -- Lejeune built a 22-point lead by halftime and cruised past North Duplin, 45-28, on Friday evening.

Alyssa Santos led the visiting Rebels with 16 pointsd. Mary Taylor Jones added six points, while Destiny George scored four points. Brooke Cottle registered one basket.

North Duplin (0-2 overall) plays host to East Duplin on Tuesday.

Hilltop Christian 37, Faith Christian 24

* Abigaile Manzaro scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds, propelling Hilltop Christian to a run-and-hide, 37-24 victory over Faith Christian Academy on a frigid Friday evening.

The triumph was the latest in a string of impressive performances by the Chargers (5-0 overall), who have won each game on their schedule by at least 15 points.

Manzaro opened quickly, establishing herself on the block and helping her mates jump out to a 17-4 advantage after one quarter. Her four made field goals in the opener foreshadowed a long evening for the host Conquerors, who were undone by a season-high 34 turnovers.

Hilltop led 28-9 at halftime.

Faith Christian star Jordan Lawhon struggled against a wave of Charger double-teams, and didn't register a made field goal until the halfway mark of the fourth quarter.

The junior point guard finished with nine points.

Rounding out the Conqueror scorebook was freshman forward Chloe Mills, who filed four points and eight rebounds. Regan Baumgartner scored four points and contributed four rebounds.

Taylor Skinner, seventh-grader Lilly Miller, Cassidy Glover and Emma Meador combined to score seven points for Faith Christian, which fell to 4-2 with the loss.

The Conquerors face Trinity Christian of Greenville on Dec. 16.

Wayne Country Day 38, Ridgecroft 30

* AHOSKIE -- Jala Holloman notched a game-high 21 points during Wayne Country Day's 38-30, non-conference conquest of Ridgecroft.

The Chargers (5-4 overall) entertain Crossroads Christian on Tuesday.

* Boys' basketball: Spring Creek 56, Jones Senior 40 -- Demartae Bizzell sizzled the nets for a game-high 27 points in the Gators' home win Friday. Teammate Daquan Bynum provided eight points.

* Boys' basketball: North Duplin 41, Lejeune 35 -- Zack Teachey emerged as the Rebels' top scorer with 12 points.

* Boys' basketball: C.B. Aycock 35, Rosewood 15 -- Jaylan Robinson and AliJuan Moore tallied six points apiece during the Golden Falcons' home win Friday. Tyrie Artis contributed three points. Wyatt Searles and Logan Price each scored three points for Rosewood.

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro Heat 44, Durham 38 -- Hayden Perry worked on a double-double -- 20 points, eight rebounds -- during the Heat's home win Friday. Perry also blocked three shots. Hayden Portela chipped in nine points.

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 49, Ridgecroft 32 -- Noah Atwood led the Chargers with 15 points. Andrew Gattis added 11 was WCDS rose to 3-3 overall this season.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Princeton 53, Magees 24 -- Jacob McCain led Princeton's offense with 12 points. Ethan Potts recorded nine points and five rebounds. Tyrese Joyner supplied nine points, three rebounds, four steals, one assist and one blocked shot. Princeton improved to 2-1 overall this season.

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 55, Community Christian 29 -- Cam Gerrard led a balanced offensive attack with 13 points for the Chargers. Teammates Jack Cole and Trent Elliott recorded eight points apiece. WCDS remained unbeaten in three outings this season.
