ROCKY MOUNT -- Junior Austin Doyle and freshman Tyler Hughes each seized an individual championship during the Grant Wilder Wilson Invitational.

Doyle emerged victorious in the 106-pound weight class with 6-4 overtime decision against Northern Nash's Jordan Whitaker. Hughes pinned Nash Central's Joshua Brice with 31 seconds left in their 152-pound title bout.

The Golden Falcons captured third in the team-title chase with 107.5 points behind Invitational champ Western Harnett (171 points) and Rocky Mount (125.5).

"I was extremely proud of the team," first-year CBA head coach Brian Doyle said. "We had a lot of (individual) victories and to finish third despite missing four starters, (it) was a great accomplishment.

"We are hoping to get them back this week as we prep for the Rosewood Invitational this coming weekend."

Senior Tyler Marquard placed second at 138 pounds, while sophomore James Reser finished third at 170 pounds.

Devin Maldonado, Chris Parks, Zack Creel, Chase Hapes, Nicholas Garcia and Bryce Adams suited up for CBA.

Southern Wayne amassed 49.5 points -- good enough for ninth place in the 15-team event. The Saints' top placer was Kimari Johnson, who grabbed runner-up honors at 160 pounds after a tech fall loss to Broughton's Christian Hite in the finals.

Timothy Taylor wound up fourth at 182 pounds.

Lester Velasquez, Raekwon Hardy, Lucas Davis, Devante Jackson, Willie Leonard, Matthew Phelps and Jywon Usher also competed for the Saints. Hardy, Jackson, Leonard and Phelps each advanced to the consolation semifinals.
