FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. -- Daria Simmons drained the nets for a career-high 24 points as University of Mount Olive defeated Emmanuel College, 64-57, on the Conference Carolinas women's basketball scene Tuesday evening.
It was the league opener for both teams.
The teams traded seven lead changes in the opening quarter before Emmanuel broke away for a 19-14 lead. The Trojan women rebounded to lead 32-30 at halftime.
Junior Ni'Ya Styles put UMO ahead for good, 40-38, late in the third period.
Kiara Jones just missed a double-double with 13 rebounds and nine points. Junior Tommarah Harris contributed 10 points. The Trojan women controlled the boards 43-37 and coaxed the Lions into 16 turnovers.
UMO (2-2 overall, 1-0 CC) visits in-state conference foe Pfeiffer U on Nov. 29.
Men's basketball
FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. -- Armond Griebe flirted with a double-double -- 17 points, eight rebounds -- during the University of Mount Olive's 72-64 loss to Emmanuel (Ga.) College on Tuesday evening.
Freshman Saiquan Jamison posted his first-ever collegiate double-double -- 13 points, 10 rebounds. Cameron Robinson added 15 points for the Trojans, who committed 17 turnovers.
It was the conference opener for both teams.
Mount Olive (1-4 overall, 0-1 CC) is the guest of Pfeiffer U on Nov. 29.
