FALL AWARDS: Wayne Christian honor athletes

Wayne Christian concluded its fall sports season with an awards ceremony and chili cook-off festival.

The Eagles celebrated winning their first-ever Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference volleyball title, and advancing to the final four of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs for the second time in school history.

Seventh-grader Paige Court earned recognition for her runner-up performance in the NCHSAA 1-A cross country state championship meet.

Wayne Christian's varsity football team, in its first year, fell to eventual Division I 8-man state champion Bethel Christian in the NCISAA 1-A playoffs. The Eagles finished 3-7 overall.

Individual award winners:

* Varsity girls volleyball: Coach's Award -- Mercy Wright; Most Improved -- Ashlee Harrelson; Christian Leadership -- Holly Gurley; Best Passer/Digger Award -- Hope Shook; Co-Most Valuable Player -- Hannah Sladick and Kasey Norris; CPIC Player-of-the-Year -- Sladick; NCISAA All-State -- Sladick and Norris.

* Varsity cross country: Coach's Award -- Cody Easom; Most Improved -- Jadin Worling; Christian Leadership -- Easom; Co-MVPs -- Court and Eli Winders.

* Varsity girls' golf: Coach's Award -- Christina Jimenez; Most Improved -- Laura Kim; Christian Leadership -- Brianna Verme; Rookie-of-the-Year -- Annalise Fitzmorris and Caroline Jones; MVP -- Grace Buddin.

* Varsity football: Coach's Award -- DJ Waters; Christian Leadership -- Dawton King; Co-Outstanding Team Player -- Kanin Preskitt and Will White; Offensive MVP -- Austin Kornegay; Defensive MVP -- Gavin Wiley; All-Colonial Carolina Conference -- Waters, Kornegay, Preskitt, White, Junior Tabe and Tyler Weeks.

* JV girls volleyball: Coach's Award -- Ashton Cobb; Most Improved -- Elizabeth Howell; Christian Leadership -- Adelyn Worling; Co-MVPs -- Madison Wells and Abigail Harrelson.

* JV football: Coach's Award -- Addison Johnson; Christian Leadership -- Maddox Johnson; Co-Outstanding Team Player -- Luke Benge and Justice Knighton; Offensive MVP -- Avery Best; Defensive MVP -- Darden Bynum.

* Middle school girls volleyball: Coach's Award -- Sarah Brogneaux; Most Improved -- Saylor Johnson and Arwen Willis; Christian Leadership -- Sarah Vinson; Defensive Specialist -- Harper Cate Flowers; Offensive Player Award -- Hannah Jones.

* Varsity cheerleading: Most Improved -- Macy Weeks; Christian Leadership -- Anna Mills; High "Flyer" Award -- Hannah Kornegay; "Spot" on Award -- Summer Rose; Most Valuable -- Anna Pender.
