FAYETTEVILLE -- No. 3-ranked Terry Sanford handed Eastern Wayne a season-ending, 6-0 loss in first-round action of the NCHSAA 3-A dual-team playoffs Tuesday afternoon.
"I was extremely proud of our team's effort today against a very strong Terry Sanford team," EW head coach Craig Hassell said. "They are always a force in tennis, but our team continued to fight through adversity as they have all year. This match is a good guage of how our team has improved from the beginning of the season and never quit."
It was the final dual-team match for five EW seniors -- Elizabeth Sutton, Emily Uzzell, Morgan Agner, Samantha Roux and Amanda Matthews. Sutton returns to action Friday against defending state champion Adrienne Hayes of Asheville in the NCHSAA individual singles championships in Burlington.
EW ended the year 7-7 overall.
