Volleyball

Eagles advance

* GREENVILLE -- Hannah Sladick turned in a solid all-around floor game during Wayne Christian's 25-10, 25-17, 25-19 victory over Ridgecroft in second-round play of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs Friday.

Sladick provided nine aces, eight kills, four blocks and four digs.

Hope Shook contributed seven kills and four aces. Mercy Wright and Ashlee Harrelson combined for four kills.

Kasey Norris collected 21 assists and two aces.

The sixth-seeded Eagles (22-4 overall) played Oakwood late Saturday with a final four berth at stake. Oakwood won the 2014 state championship and has twice eliminated Wayne Christian from postseason play.

Chargers eliminated

* CHARLOTTE -- Cresset Christian handed Wayne Country Day a season-ending 23-25, 22-25, 25-19, 22-25 loss in second-round action of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs at United Faith Christian Academy on Friday evening.

Lillian Freeman provided a career-high 20 kills and posted three blocks. Hannah Neal registered 17 kills, followed by Jala Holloman with eight kills.

DeKiya Thomas recorded 32 assists and five kills.

The 10th-seeded Chargers opened the postseason with a 25-22, 25-17, 25-11 conquest of Ridgecroft. Neal just missed a double-double with 10 kills and nine aces.

Libero Katie Strickland had eight aces. Freeman supplied eight kills. Olivia Dively and Holloman delivered six kills apiece.

WCDS concluded the year 10-11 overall.

Cross country

Sullivan emerges victorious

* NEWTON GROVE -- Princeton senior Austin Sullivan claimed the Carolina 1-A Conference boys' individual championship during the season-ending meet contested at Hobbton High School.

Sullivan ran the soggy 5k course in 17 minutes, 10 seconds -- 79 seconds faster than teammate and meet runner-up Brent Hurst.

Hobbton's tandem of Xavier McLamb (19:08) and Sean Silcott (19:50) crossed the line third and fourth, respectively.

Spring Creek's Levi Miller took fifth in 19:59.

Hobbton's Victor Aguirre claimed sixth in 20:13, followed by Rosewood's Cameron Smith (20:23), Hobbton's Sammy Flores (20:27) and Kevin Ibanez (20:32) and North Duplin's Chase King (20:42).

The host Wildcats claimed the team title with a 30-41 victory over Princeton. Rosewood scored 98 points. Spring Creek and North Duplin shared fourth place with 123 points apiece.

On the girls' side, Hobbton's Ashley Hinterleiter ended Haley Thurston's three-year reign as conference champion. She turned in a first-place time of 21:42, while Thurston -- a senior -- wound up second in 22:57.

North Duplin's Kendy Rangel secured third in 24:27. Rosewood's Elaina Amy seized fourth in 25:24. North Duplin's trio of Esmerelda Perez (26:28), Brenda Lopez-Hernandez (26:43) and Joanna Flores (26:54) grabbed positions 5 through 7.

Rosewood's Rebecca Fitzmaurice (27:07) claimed eighth overall. Hobbton teammates Gabriele Williams (27:42) and Crystal Rubio (27:45) completed the top 10.

The top 10 runners in each race earned all-Carolina Conference honors.

Thurston and her Rebel teammates got revenge by winning the team title with 23 points. Hobbton collected 43, while Rosewood had 58.
