Let's win one for Hayes.
And Wayne Country Day did it in dominant fashion on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.
Hunter Bryson scored less than two minutes into the game off a cross from Ben Cohen, and the Chargers hammered Community Christian, 7-0, in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference game.
Noah Adkins notched four goals on assists from Bryson and James Johnson, and converted two penalty kicks.
Cohen and Nehemiya Shaw each logged a second-half goal.
Colby Bowen dished out an assists.
"It was a good performance considering the weather and soft pitch," WCDS head coach Steve Ellis said. "The lads moved the ball well and really worked as a unit."
Gerrard, who tore his ACL in the preseason, took the opening kickoff and was immediately subbed out of the game. He is scheduled to undergo surgery today.
"(Hayes has) been great for the program and was very unfortunate to get injured in preseason. He's still continued to be a captain and a leader on the team from the sideline," Ellis said.
"Though his time on the field was very, very short, the game today was all about him as heads into surgery tomorrow. The lads wanted to make sure they got the win for him."
