WINTERVILLE -- Emily Newsome flirted with a triple double as Eastern Wayne fell from the unbeaten ranks with a 26-24, 25-23, 25-16 loss to South Central.
It was the Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference opener for both teams.
Newsome delivered nine kills, seven aces and eight assists for the Warriors, who had their eight-match win streak snapped. Alyssa Jackson and Jennifer Sparks served three aces apiece. Naomi Williams handed out a team-high nine assists.
Jackson posted four blocks.
Sparks logged 10 digs on defense.
"We needed this loss," EW first-year head coach Anna Hajjar said. "Now we are humbled and see where we can stand in our conference. Eastern Wayne is the underdog in this conference. Known to have a losing record, we are now getting our identity back that has been lost since 2008.
"Even though we lost 3-0, we pushed South Central every point. D.H. Conley, Rose, South Central and New Bern now know that the Warriors are contenders in this conference."
Eastern Wayne (8-1 overall, 0-1 ECC) entertains New Bern on Tuesday. The Bears have won all six meetings in conference play.
