Pate throws opening-round, 1-hit shutout

CALYPSO -- North Duplin opened defense of its state title with a 20-0, five-inning thrashing of KIPP Pride in opening-round play of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A playoffs Wednesday evening.
Rylee Pate threw a one-hitter and logged 14 strikeouts inside the circle. Offensively, Pate batted 2-for-3 with a double.
Alyssa Santos swatted a home run during a 2-for-2 outing. Haley Brogden and Courtney Brock contributed two hits apiece.
Mikayla Koch, Kenzie Taylor, Mary Barwick and Haley Thurston each provided one hit. Shaily McCarty doubled and drove in a career-high five RBI.
The seventh-seeded Rebels (17-3 overall) entertain Gates County at 2 p.m. Saturday.
