Baseball

Eastern Wayne 5,

North Lenoir 4

* Zack Smith and Ryan Warren pounded out two hits apiece as Eastern Wayne knocked off North Lenoir, 5-4, in non-conference play Tuesday afternoon.

The Warriors swept the two-game regular-season series.

Smith and Warren (RBI) combined for three doubles. Collin Nix (RBI), Brock Johnson (RBI), Carlyle Smith (RBI), Mike Wiggins, Lee Daniels and Tanner Wells each contributed one hit.

Johnson started on the bump and worked five innings. He gave up three runs (two earned) and recorded four strikeouts. Wells took over and earned the save with two innings of three-hit, two-strikeout relief.

"We're pitching it good right now. You want to see that," EW head coach Jabo Fulghum said. "We're getting some timely hits. It wasn't the best game in the world, but a win is a win. I can tell we're getting a little more confidence, but we're still trying to find ourselves.

"We have to stay hungry, which is what it's all about."

Reed Parris started on the mound for NL and allowed one run on four hits in four innings of work. Alex Jones surrendered four runs on four hits in middle relief. Reese Hobbs threw the sixth.

Braxton Greene, Garrett Letchworth and Joseph Harrison paced the Hawks' offense with two hits apiece. Allen Sutton and Zach Turner each had one hit.

EW swept the two-game regular-season series.

The Hawks (0-2 overall) face Charles B. Aycock today, while the Warriors (3-1) entertain Greene Central on Thursday.

Wayne Country Day 12,

Community Christian 0 (5 inn.)

* Jack Talton threw a complete-game three-hitter as Wayne Country Day claimed a 12-0, mercy-rule victory over Community Christian on Tuesday afternoon.

Talton logged three strikeouts during his 58-pitch outing.

Amane Godo belted a three-run home run and collected four RBI, while John Strickland smacked a solo homer. Patrick Hall and Drew Barnes (RBI) provided two hits apiece.

Case Kermode (RBI), Parker Smith, Tanner Willman and Jacob Magera each had one it.

The Chargers (2-0-1 overall) entertain Halifax Academy on Friday, and face Southampton (Va.) Academy on Saturday.

Greene Central 9,

Spring Creek 8

* SNOW HILL -- Kaden Geelen pounded out three hits during Spring Creek's 9-8, non-conference loss to Greene Central on Tuesday afternoon.

Casey Whitfield added two hits.

Matt Dupuy took the mound loss.

Bethel Christian 11,

Wayne Christian 1 (5 inn.)

* Bethel Christian cranked out 11 hits and capitalized on five Wayne Christian errors in an 11-1, non-conference win Tuesday afternoon.

Hunter Burt, Mason White, Jaxon Bauer and Jaxon Anderson each had one hit for Wayne Christian. Will White drove in the Eagles' lone run in the third inning.

Holden Foster took the mound loss.

Wayne Christian (0-1 overall) opens Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play Thursday at Lee Christian.

Princeton 17,

Goldsboro 4 (5 inn.)

* Princeton exploded for nine first-inning runs and cruised past Goldsboro, 17-4, during their non-conference contested at Cougar Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs swept the two-game regular-season series.

Thomas Vick and Chandler Patrick paced Goldsboro's offense with two hits apiece. Jon Stevens, Cameron Roux and Peter Mehlhaff each had one hit.

South Lenoir 6,

North Duplin 0

* CALYPSO -- North Duplin scratched out two hits during its 6-0, non-conference loss to South Lenoir on Tuesday afternoon.

Copeland Brickhouse and Caleb Cashwell had one hit apiece for the Rebels.

Ricky Cameron endured the mound loss. He retired four SL batters on strikeouts and permitted six hits. The Blue Devils broke the game open with a five-run, sixth-inning outburst.

"(A) tough loss on the mound for Ricky Cameron tonight," ND head coach Chuck Crumpler said. 'He pitched well. (I was) happy with our performance."

Wilmington Christian 14,

Faith Christian 5 (5 inn.)

* WILMINGTON -- Faith Christian dropped a 14-5 decision to Wilmington Christian in a N.C. Christian Schools Association 2-A affair called due to darkness Tuesday evening.

Alex Watson (RBI), Christian Mills (two RBI) provided two hits apiece for the Conquerors. Watson gave up eight runs (three earned) and sat down three Wilmington batters on strikeouts while on the mound.

Faith Christian (1-3 overall, 0-1 District 4) entertains Trinity Christian of Greenville in a non-District 4 game on Friday.

Softball

South Lenoir 4, North Duplin 2

* CALYPSO -- South Lenoir pushed across two sixth-inning runs and upended previously-unbeaten North Duplin, 4-2, on Tuesday afternoon.

Natalie Ramirez led the Rebels' offense with two hits. Taylor Jones, Haley Brogden, Alyssa Santos and Courtney Brock supplied one hit apiece.

Brogden started inside the circle and permitted two earned runs on seven hits and two walks. She struck out five Blue Devil batters. Rylee Pate surrendered two earned runs on two hits and struck out six, but endured the mound loss.

The Rebels dropped to 3-1 overall this season.

Girls' soccer

Community Christian 3,

Wayne Country Day 0

* Community Christian knocked off Wayne Country Day, 3-0, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.

"The scoreline doesn't reflect the game," Chargers head coach Steve Ellis said. "We weathered the pressure we knew we would have at the start of the game, and two lapses cost us. The second half we opened out and had chances to do more that we didn't take.

"Overall, I was pleased with how we played, especially in the second half."

The Cyclones led 2-0 at the break and added one second-half goal.

Wayne Country Day (1-1-0 overall) returns to action Friday against Smithfield-Selma in The Brittany at the Gillette Soccer Complex in Wilson. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

Boys' tennis

North Johnston 8, Princeton 1

* Sophomore Jacob Williams claimed Princeton's lone point in an 8-1, non-conference loss to North Johnston on Tuesday afternoon.

Williams defeated the Panthers' Trey Motley 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.

Rosewood 9,

Spring Creek 0

* Rosewood swept the singles and doubles courts, and dealt Carolina 1-A Conference foe Spring Creek a 9-0 loss on Tuesday afternoon.

Jordan Price, Chase Bartlett, Jeremy Lintner, Lucas Parrish, Collin Pendegraph and Marc Lewis each prevailed in straight-set fashion during singles play. Parrish-Price, Bartlett-Pendegraph and Jacob Smith-Dalton Ira completed the overall shutout in doubles.

Rosewood (3-1 overall, 1-0 CC) entertains Princeton on Thursday.

Boys' golf

Parrott defeats Wayne Christian

* Wayne Christian's Drake Wise shot a team-low 52 during a dual-team meet contested against Parrott Academy at Lane Tree Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.

Parrott won 171-231.

Logan Jackson (58), Braxton Flores (60) and Adam Grady (61) completed Wayne Christian's four-player total.

JV

* Baseball: C.B. Aycock 10, Rosewood 0 (5 inn.) -- Carson Smitherman's one-out, three-RBI triple cleared the bases and invoked the mercy rule against the visiting Eagles on Tuesday afternoon. Smitherman ended the day 3-for-4 with a team-high four RBI. Sophomore Blake Gipson batted 2-for-3 with two RBI. Tyler Daniels, Jordan Gay, Kaleb Moore, Seth Harrison, Nick Aycock (two RBI) and Tyrie Artis (RBI) supplied one hit apiece. The Golden Falcons used five pitchers -- sophomore Caleb Matthews (three strikeouts), Luke Frederick, Smitherman (earned pitching win), Moore and Aycock (two strikeouts).

* Girls' soccer: Wayne Country Day 2, Community Christian 0 -- Janae Jones scored both goals in the Chargers' season-opening win. Hanna McKeithan and Nancy Chen each dished out one assist.

* Baseball: Eastern Wayne 4, North Lenoir 3 -- Justin Edwards emerged as the winning pitcher during the Warriors' road win Tuesday afternoon. Colby Miller, Jason Mitchell and Noah Frost collected two hits apiece.

Middle schools

* Softball: Crossroads Christian 8, Wayne Christian 3 -- Brianna Verme and Abigail Kornegay combined for 12 strikeouts inside the pitcher's circle. Crossroads managed just two hits in the game. Leah Boswell tripled, while Verme doubled for the Eagles. Kornegay, Elizabeth Howell and Abbe Harris had one hit apiece. Wayne Christian (0-2 overall) entertains Neuse Charter on Thursday.
