NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Callie Ferrell connected on a game-tying two-RBI single and scored the game-winning run on a passed ball as University of Mount Olive defeated Newberry, 6-5, in game two of their non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

Newberry took the opener, 2-1.

In the nightcap, UMO hurler Caitlin Ewers surrendered four earned runs in the top half of the first inning. Julie Hodges took over on the rubber and tossed 51/3 innings of seven-hit, three-strikeout relief.

Madison Johnston earned the save with 11/3 innings of one-strikeout, scoreless relief.

Down 5-2 through five innings, the Trojans got a pinch-hit, RBI single from JenniBeth Burge, which closed the gap to 5-3. Ferrell followed with a base knock that pushed Burge and Kristin Power, who singled earlier in the inning, across the plate.

Newberry's defensive blunder allowed Ferrell to score.

In the opener, Maude McCourrey limited the Trojans to an unearned run on three hits and logged four strikeouts on the mound. Devon Morrison collected her third save with one inning of one-strikeout relief.

Johnston (2-4) endured the pitching loss for UMO. Newberry touched her for two earned runs on six hits. Johnston and Hodges threw three innings apiece.

Mount Olive (4-8 overall) travels to Francis Marion today.

Mount Olive (4-1 overall, 3-0 CC) claimed two of three doubles points in the men's match. The No. 3 tandem of Martin Moser-Yannic Stark prevailed 8-4, while the No. 2 duo of Jose Luis Cortijos-Martim Sousa emerged victorious, 8-3.

Moser's win at No. 3 singles tied the overall match at 3-3. Sousa, Stark and Jacob Clarke each earned a straight-set decision to cap the overall outcome.

In women's play, UMO dropped two of three doubles matches.

The rally started with Paulina Delgado's straight-set shutout at No. 3 singles. Stella Di Michelle, Alejandra Hernandez, Mulan Bartz and Mariana Gamboa each delivered a singles point.

The Trojans return home Tuesday against Chowan University.

MOUNT OLIVE -- Unbeaten Lynn (Fla.) University reeled off five consecutive goals within a 101/2-minute period, and handed University of Mount Olive a 10-8 loss in men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.
