Trojans avoid sweep against Florida Southern

MOUNT OLIVE -- Zak Orrison belted a third-inning home run and No. 19-ranked University of Mount Olive defeated Florida Southern, 6-4, at Scarborough Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Trojans avoided the three-game sweep after enduring an embarrassing doubleheader loss Saturday.
Orrison (three RBI), Brett Lang and Stephen Wallace recorded three hits apiece for the Trojans. David Mayo (RBI), Grant Tyndall (RBI), Alvin Swoop and Derek Deler each supplied one hit.
The No. 13-ranked Moccasins (8-3 overall) carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning before Orrison deposited a pitch over the left-field fence. FSC retook the lead with a single run in the fourth.
UMO plated four runs during its next at-bat. Deler scored on Duke Hill's sacrifice fly to left. Tyndall drove in a run and scored on Orrison's fielder's choice groundout. Swoop trotted home on Mayo's single through the left side.
Trojan starter Austin Hutchison (2-0) yielded three earned runs on six hits and fanned five FSC batters in a five-inning stint. Dario Santangelo worked four innings of four-hit, seven-strikeout relief and earned his first save of the season.
Mount Olive (4-3) opens defense of its Conference Carolinas regular-season title at home next weekend against in-state rival Pfeiffer University. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and single game on Sunday.
Indoor track
WINSTON-SALEM -- Eight University of Mount Olive competitors combined to break five school records during the USC Invitational contested at the JDL Fast Track Complex.
Jacob Urys set the new school record with a time of 1 minute, 56.19 seconds in the 800-meter run. The foursome of Cedric Thomas, Davide Cuccurullo, Gillermo Matesanz and Joaquim Cotano established the program's new mark in the 1,600-meter relay.
Cotano, Urys, Jonathan Dalhke and Adam Craig set an NCAA provisional qualifying time (10:07.94) in the distance medley relay. Teammate Aki Kitigawa, secured first place in the 5,000-meter run.
The quartet of Shona Blades, Alexis McNeill, Bailee Henry and Paulina Kremling posted program-best times in the DMR and 1,600-meter relay (5:14.63) on the women's side.
UMO returns to action next Saturday in the season-ending Conference Carolinas Indoor Track and Field championship meet at the JDL Fast Track Complex.
Men's tennis
FLORENCE, S.C. -- Perennial Peach Belt power Francis Marion University handed University of Mount Olive a 7-2, non-conference loss on Sunday afternoon.
The loss halted the Trojans' three-match win streak.
FMU claimed two doubles points and triumphed on five singles courts. Martin Sousa claimed UMO's lone singles point. The tandem of Sousa-Jose Luis Cortijos won at No. 2 doubles for the Trojans.
Mount Olive, ranked No. 7 in the Southeast Region, opened Carolinas Conference play with a 7-2 decision over Emmanuel on Friday and a 5-1 conquest of Erskine on Saturday.
Women's tennis
FLORENCE, S.C. -- Francis Marion University handed University of Mount Olive a 9-0 defeat on Sunday afternoon.
The Trojan women (1-3 overall) launched their Conference Carolinas season with a 6-3 win over Emmanuel on Friday. They endured an 8-1 loss to Erskine on Saturday.
UMO returns home Friday to face Belmont Abbey.
