UMO: Kaeding leads Trojan women

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- University of Mount Olive's Julia Kaeding shares 14th place individually after opening-round play of the World Golf Village Women's Invitational that teed off Sunday afternoon.

Kaeding carded an opening-round 77. She birdied No. 11 and was in second place after the first three holes.

Anne Barboteau (80) ended the round tied for 32nd. Julie Loennechen (82) shares 46th, while Paula Guridi (86) is tied for 70th.

The Trojan women posted a team score of 325 -- good enough for 11th overall in the 18-team field that includes eight teams ranked in the Golfstat Division II top 20 poll.

The 36-hole event concludes today.

Softball

HICKORY -- University of Mount Olive plated 39 runs during the two-day Bear Bash hosted by in-state Southeast Region foe Lenoir-Rhyne College.

The Trojan women pounded out mercy-rule wins over Glenville State (13-0) and Bluefield State (23-0). L-RC handed UMO 14-10 and 4-3 setbacks. Madison Johnson threw a seven-hit shutout and posted two strikeouts against Glenville State, which gave second-year head coach Mandy Sansbury a victory against her former team.

Caitlin Ewers swatted a home run against Glenville. Ewers and Kelsey Akers combined for eight of UMO's 16 hits in the win.

Mount Olive (2-2 overall) opens the home portion of its season Tuesday with a doubleheader against Peach Belt member Francis Marion (S.C.) University. First pitch is 2 p.m. at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.

Men's volleyball

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Robert Poole cranked out 10 kills during University of Mount Olive's 16-25, 22-25, 20-25 loss against No. 8-ranked Penn State.

Poole added two digs for the Trojans, who dropped to 3-2 on the season. Jeff Yasalonis handed out 25 assists after getting named the Off the Block/Springback Inc. national player-of-the-month for January.

Mike Mann provided five kills and served two aces. Andrew Salmon emerged as the defensive leader with six digs. UMO logged six block assists as a team.

The Nittany Lions held the Trojans to a .150 hitting percentage.

Mount Olive (3-2 overall) continues play Wednesday at Conference Carolinas foe Barton College.

Men's indoor track

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- University of Mount Olive's Guillermo Alcala and Nick Greyno each set new school records during the Vince Brown Invitational contested at Christopher Newport University.

Alcala posted a time of 7.04 seconds in the 60-meter dash, while teammate Cedric Thomas crossed the line .03 seconds behind. Greyno broke his own program record with a toss of 14.60 meters in the shot put.

Jonathan Dahlke posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:13.81 in the mile run. Freshman Martin Bayles moved into fourth place in the UMO history books with a height of 3.60 meters in the pole vault.

Anthony Edwards took fifth in the triple jump (13.07 meters).

The Trojans return to action Feb. 20 at the UCS Invitational in Winston-Salem.

Women's indoor track

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- University of Mount Olive's Paulina Kremling just missed breaking the school record in the 800-meter run during the Vince Brown Invitational contested at Christopher Newport Uiversity.

Kremling broke the tape in 2:22.6 -- just 2.9 seconds shy of setting the new program mark. Teammate Kelsey Valentine posted the third-best time in UMO history in the mile run (5:24.64).

Danielle Hill logged a height of 2.15 meters in the pole vault. Khadijah Kale recorded a distance of 12.16 meters in the shot put and 12.48 meters in the weight throw.

Mount Olive returns to action Feb. 20 at the UCS Invitational in Winston-Salem.
