PIKEVILLE -- There's a first quarter, a second quarter and a fourth quarter.

Oh, and a third quarter.

The Charles B. Aycock Golden Falcons gave up a 21-18 halftime lead over the South Central Falcons in the third quarter of Tuesday evening's Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference matchup.

"Another third quarter. The third quarter has been our plague all year," CBA head basketball coach Roy Harrell said, whose team eventually lost to South Central, 44-42.

"It was the same thing at their (Falcons) place. They outscored us 20-5 at their place, and we lose by one. That's our Achilles Heel."

Senior Taylor Daniels assisted junior Tanika "Mookie" Powell with a layup in transition to start the third quarter. Powell threw a backdoor pass to Daniels, and the Golden Falcons led South Central, 24-22, with five minutes remaining before the fourth quarter.

South Central senior Manessah Fox stole the ball and passed it to freshman Ninevah Reddick for a layup. Reddick drove the court on the next possession and scored two more points. The Falcons ended the third quarter with a 33-28 lead over the Golden Falcons.

Daniels grabbed the ball from an opponent, ran the length of the court and scored for CBA at the beginning of the final quarter. Sophomore Hannah Vinson assisted Powell, who made a basket as two defenders hovered over her. Daniels stole the ball, drove the court and scored two points. Powell sank a free throw, and CBA tied South Central at 39-all. Senior Deja George swished a 2-point jumper, and South Central eventually led the Golden Falcons, 44-40, with 49 seconds left on the clock. Powell drove the lane for a layup. Seven seconds remained in regulation, but CBA was unable to tie the game.

Sophomore Brooke Bostic led all scorers with 11 points for South Central (11-9 overall, 5-5 conference). Fox ended the game with nine points.

Daniels recorded 16 points for the Golden Falcons (7-13 overall, 1-8 conference). Powell ended the game with 12 points.

CBA travel to New Bern to face the Bears on Friday.
