Nothing seemed to go right for Goldsboro Cougars during the first two quarters on Thursday evening.
Ayden-Grifton overcame a 5-0 deficit in the first quarter and eventually led 12-9. Goldsboro senior Tyona Moses picked up her third foul with five minutes left in the second quarter.
"We weren't applying pressure. We were just going through the motions, so that's why I switched to man-to-man," said head basketball coach LaTina Bullock, whose team went on to defeat the Chargers, 52-29, in Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference action.
"We weren't converting on transition buckets either, but eventually it started falling for us."
Goldsboro led the Chargers, 22-17, to start the third quarter. Freshman McKayla Roberts dove on the court for a loose ball and won the jump ball possession. Her aggressiveness led to Moses hitting a 3-pointer off of an assist from junior Natiana Barnes.
Moses stole the ball at half court and drove the lane for a layup. Senior Tawana Jones scored two points off of a turnaround jumper. Senior Sterling Jones launched the ball to Moses for two more points, and the Cougars led 35-21 at the end of the third quarter.
Freshman Tziah Kelly grabbed the ball from the Chargers and passed it to Moses who assisted Roberts with a layup. Kelly stole the ball again and assisted Moses with two more points.
Moses ended the game with 29 points, and Jones recorded 13 points.
The Cougars travel to Greene Central next Tuesday.
