UMO men, women dispatch Southern Wesleyan

MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mount Olive opened the game with a 16-2 run and easily defeated second-year Conference Carolinas member Southern Wesleyan, 78-49, in women's basketball on Tuesday evening.

Ni'Ya Styles pumped in a team-high 18 points for the Trojan women, who remained unbeaten in two league outings this season.

Daria Simmons contributed 17 points, followed by Kiara Jones (13) and Aerial Johnson (11). Jada Bacchus logged seven points and seven rebounds.

The Trojan women (3-3 overall) return home Saturday for a league contest against Converse (S.C.) Converse. It's Toys for Tots day. Bring an unwrapped toy and receive free admission.

Tip-off is 2 p.m.

Men's basketball

MOUNT OLIVE -- University of Mount Olive shot a season-high 61 percent from the floor and dominated Southern Wesleyan, 98-56, during their Conference Carolinas affair Tuesday evening.

Dontrell Brite just missed a double-double with 15 points and eight rebounds for the Trojans, who improved to 4-4 overall. JaQuan Blount and Mike Moore punched in 13 points apiece, while Dominique Reed dropped in 11 points -- all in the first half. Moore snared six rebounds. Reed cleared the boards for six rebounds and blocked five shots.

Mykel Hart provided 10 points in a reserve role.

The Trojan men owned a 37-26 edge in rebounds, 29-9 advantage in points off of turnovers and had 26 team assists.

UMO returns to action Saturday at Belmont Abbey. Tip-off is 4 p.m.
