Wayne County swimmers protected "their house" -- rather their pool -- Tuesday evening.
Competitors from Goldsboro, Rosewood, Charles B. Aycock, Eastern Wayne and Southern Wayne combined to emerge victorious in 17 of 22 contested events inside the B.G. Darden Natatorium.
Goldsboro's girls won the team portion with 103 points.
The Cougars opened the eight-team meet with a five-second victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The foursome of Anna Breck, Anna Prezbindowski, Kaylee Lyon and sister Matti Rose Lyon touched the wall in 2 minutes, 21:22 seconds -- 5 1/2 seconds faster than runner-up Charles B. Aycock.
The same quartet place second in the 200 free relay.
Breck and Prezbindowski returned later in the evening to finish first and second, respectively, in the 100 butterfly. Breck also shaved nearly two seconds off of her regional-qualifying time in the 100 backstroke that she set in the season-opening meet. Prezbindowski, whose older brother Vic is a freshman at UNC Wilmington, claimed the 100-yard breaststroke.
Matti Lyon won the 200 free.
Aycock's Abby Sauls, a returning state qualifier, seems to be following in older sister Savannah's footsteps ... well strokes. The second-year varsity swimmer qualified for the east 3-A regionals with a meet-winning time of 1:01.39 in the 100 free. She has already qualified in the 500 free.
Zech Chastain added two events to his regional-qualifying resume -- 50 free (23.18) and 100 breaststroke (1:09.53). The foursome Chastain, Colton Marley, Ellis Smith and Zach Broome claimed the 200 free relay and are less than half a minute off of the regional qualifying standard time.
Southern Wayne's Austin Edgecomb continues pursuing regional-qualifying marks in the 200 and 500 free.
"Austin had great swims," SW head coach Chad Davis said. "He is very close to the automatic time in the 200. It's early in the season and the first time he has swam this even this year as well as the five hundred.
"Endurance will build and I see him making those times in coming meets. (Overall) the team did good for the second meet of the season. (There's) still growth to be made."
Eastern Wayne got great swims all evening -- most notably from the boys' 200 relay, Faith Boyette, Madison Tallarida and Yohan Yan.
The Warriors' relay -- Yinhao Chen, Zach Childer, Will Sorrell and Yen, touched the wall second in the 200 medley relay. Chen claimed the 100 free in 58 seconds. Boyette earned second in the 200 individual medley (IM), while Tallarida was third in the 100 back.
Yan took third in the 500 free.
"I am proud of the hard work and determination that the Eastern Wayne swim team has exhibited so far this season," first-year EW head coach Nate Schuler said. "I look forward to seeing them continue to improve throughout the remainder of the season.
"Eastern Wayne has a great group of students swimming this year."
Rosewood's Rebecca Fitzmaurice seized the grueling 20-lap 500 free in 7:43.23. The Eagles' foursome of Blue Eddleman, Mason Meza, Brian Carrington and Liam Bergeron won the 200 free relay in regional-consideration time 1:47.66.
Eddleman was second in the 100 breaststroke.
Returning state qualifier Dalton Ira won the 200 IM in a personal-best time of 2:29.06, and he claimed second in the 100 free.
"Our team has seven new swimmers and we were really excited to see their progress," RHS head coach Natalie Ira said. "The team has been working really hard and the results are paying off with faster time. Two of our swimmers have already qualified for the regionals and others have met regional consideration times.
"We are proud of their efforts and their positive attitude."
