Eighth-grader Lexi Jeffreys just missed her first career varsit double-double with nine points and 18 rebounds during Wayne Country Day's 50-22, season-opening loss to Wilson Christian on Tuesday evening.
"Lexi played two full games, probably a combination of 50 minutes overall with this game and the JV game," WCDS head coach Claude Waters said. "Lexi is a natural around the glass, regardless if whether her back is to it or she's facing it. She knows how to finish, she understands positioning and she puts in the extra work."
Wilson Christian led 12-3 after one quarter. Lillian Freeman accounted for the Chargers' lone basket -- a 3-pointer off an assist from Destiny Williams.
Freeman led WCDS with 10 points. Kaitlyn Daniels (two points) and Jasmine Jones (one point) also scratched in the scoring colum.
All 13 WCDS players saw court time.
"I was pleased without the efforts throughout the course of the game," Waters said. "We've got to learn how to fight for 32 minutes. That, and understand out strength inside, we tried to get the ball inside to them, but we have to be more patient with the guard play."
Wilson's aggressive defense forced 22 turnovers and helped lead to a commanding 25-9 lead at halftime.
"This game here, although it's on the record as a loss, for us it was our scrimmage to see where we're at and what we can do to know where we're going," Waters said.
WCDS (0-1 overall) faces Neuse Charter in the Cape Fear Christian Invitational on Friday. Tip-off is 3 p.m. in Erwin.
