GREENVILLE -- Ten different players got into the scoring act as Wayne Country Day handed Pope John Paul II Catholic High School a 9-0, mercy-rule defeat on Thursday afternoon.
It was the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A opener for both teams.
Hunter Bryson and Luis Lopez recorded two goals and one assist apiece in the road win. Ben Cohen, James Thompson, Tony Townsend, Hunter Hawkins and Matt Kierski each provided one goal.
Kierski delivered two assists. Lopez, Noah Adkins, Marquise Newell and Nick Fletcher each posted one assist.
"We played quick tonight and the two early goals took Pope John Paul out of the game," said WCDS head coach Steve Ellis, whose team is 9-0-1 in its last 10 outings of the season.
"All of our players got on the field tonight and I was able to push up two JV players -- Newell and David Gurley. It is something we've done each season and pays off in the long run. Both played well."
The Chargers (11-1-1 overall) visit Faith Christian of Rocky Mount on Monday.
