Spectators often overlook a defense when the offense puts points on the board.
But for Rosewood High football coach Robert Britt, defense has been the answer for the Eagles this season.
"Coming into the season, we had questions on defense," Britt said. "Our defense has done a pretty good job. Progressed. Play it our way."
The Eagles shut out Lejeune 47-0 last Friday.
Rosewood defensive coach Jason King believes that making tackles for stops and forcing opponents into turnovers should help improve the Eagles' 2-2 record. King identified some of the key components on defense -- senior Dylan Melgar, sophomore Tucker Chapin and senior Kaleb Taylor.
King said Melgar dealt with injuries last year, but has improved this year as a defensive end. Chapin is the young safety that makes the tackles. Taylor is a strong defensive tackle acccording to King, and the perfect ingredient for the Eagles' defense.
"We've improved as a unit. Defensive line has improved," King said. "Tackling has gotten better. We're a fairly young defense, but we're not chalking mistakes up to youth."
Rosewood travels to Deep Run tonight to face South Lenoir. Britt said his team is ready for the Blue Devils' wing-T formation and hopes his team can slow it down. He hopes South Lenoir has trouble scoring.
"Our main goal is to be better this week than last week," Britt said.
