Rebels turn back Gators in penalty-kick shootout

CALYPSO -- North Duplin upended Spring Creek 4-3 in a penalty-kick shootout and emerged victorious in a Carolina 1-A Conference match played at H.E. Grubbs Field on Wednesday evening.
The teams battled through an exhausting 2-2 draw through regulation play and two 10-minute overtime sessions. Dario Castenada scored in the 12th minute and teammate Luis Velasquez notched the game-tying goal in the 36th minute.
Wilber Velasquez, Luis Velasquez, Danny Castenada and Juan Garcia each converted a goal in the PK shootout. The Rebels missed their fifth shootout attempt and the Gators' final kicker shot the ball high over the crossbar.
ND goalie Luis Martinez logged 17 saves.
David Ortiz and Gustavos Avala each scored in regulation for Spring Creek. Noah Avila and Hugo Zavala each had one assist.
The Rebels (6-2-0 overall, 2-1-0 CC) entertain Hobbton next Monday, while the Gators (1-2-0 CC) are the guests of Princeton the same evening.
