MOUNT OLIVE -- A well-respected and pillar of his community, Michael Martin tragically lost his life in the line of duty while chasing a speeding motorcylist in his patrol car in 1988.

Since then Martin has been remembered each year by his alma mater -- the University of Mount Olive. A scholarship fund was set up in Martin's honor after his death and is expected to eclipse the $600,000 mark this year.

The 28th installment of the annual tournament tees off with shotgun starts at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on the Southern Wayne Country Club links.

"The tournament is one of our biggest fund-raisers and it's a good way to start off the school year," said Dwayne McKay, UMO director of external affairs who added the tournament sets the tone for the Trojan Club each year.

"It's an excellent opportunity for our coaches and athletics staff members to come out and personally thank all of the participants for their support."

McKay also recognized Friendly Mart, Neil Price and AN Martin for their "efforts and support."

The tournament raised $49,000 in 2014.

There are plenty of incentives for golfers who tackle the wide-open course. Sale Auto Mall is sponsoring a designated hole that if a player scores an ace (hole-in-one), he or she will win a new car.

A silent auction is also planned. Proceeds will go directly into the scholarship and Trojan Club funds.
