Post 11 on brink of elimination from postseason

Zack Smith relieved Hampton to begin the sixth inning, and Wilson County took advantage. Designated hitter Nick Sanders reached on a single to left, advanced to third on two wild pitches and scored when catcher Chase Long reached safely on an error from Wayne County shortstop Hank Smitherman.

Wilson all but closed the door in the seventh inning with three runs on three hits and another Wayne County defensive error. Those miscues -- and a couple of late-inning base-running blunders -- frustrated Post 11 head coach Jason Sherrer.

"Any kind of mental mistake is a frustrating feat," he said. "It's hard to come back, because if they're giving you outs and you're making a mistake and not taking advantage of it, most of the time it's mental. It's a not being locked in thing.

"It is what it is. It's percent frustrating but you live, you learn and you try and get better."

Hampton and catcher Kevin Williams were the only two Wayne County players to have an RBI. Post 11 managed just six hits and held to three runs for the second straight game.

Sherrer knows his team's inconsistent offense has the ability to be more potent. He's already discussed some lineup changes with assistant coach Walker Gourley heading into today's do-or-die game at Southern Wayne.

"Walker and I have been tossing back a couple things here and there," he said. "We'll see what we can do. There might be a little change tomorrow. I don't know that we have an intensity issue.

"I think it's just the makeup of this club. They're not 'rah-rah' guys, which I've never asked them to be. For us, there's not a lot of ups and there's not a lot of downs. It's very even keeled."
