Who will retain their crown?

Or will new champions pen their names in the Wayne County Men's Amateur record books?

We'll find out in 33 days.

The 17th installment of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins July 10 on the Lane Tree Golf Club links. Play moves to picturesque Walnut Creek Country Club for day two.

The champions in four divisions will be decided on the final day at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course.

Registration is ongoing and the final date to submit an entry application is June 26 at 5 p.m. The fee is $125 that includes a gift package presented to the participating golfers.

The field is limited to 144 players.

Jeremy Joyner carded a final-round 66 and emerged as the Open Division champion on the Southern Wayne CC links a year ago. He defeated second-round leader Nick Adams, who faded out of contention with a final-round 72.

Jeff Jackson claimed the Senior Division with a seven-stroke victory over Randy Adams. Sprunt Hill secured the Super Senior title with a two-shot triumph over Richard Walderman.

William Jetton became the first-ever Masters Division champ with a three-stroke victory over Mickey Nance. The Masters Division was added last year for golfers ages 70 and older.

The tournament's title sponsor is Highway 55 Burgers, Shakes and Fries.

Meanwhile, the Wayne County Junior Amateur Championship committee has abandoned its one-day, 18-hole event. In an effort to grow the game of golf and promote summer-long participation, the WCJAC has developed a new, nine-hole format that will be contested during a four-week period.

Each tournament begins with a 15-minute clinic that will be followed by nine holes of stroke-play competition. A winner from each age group will be determined by their combined total score from three of four rounds. The four sites and dates are -- Goldsboro Municipal GC (June 25), Southern Wayne (July 14), Lane Tree (July 21) and Southern Wayne (July 28).

The entry fee is $20.

"It is our hope that this new and challening format will create a renewed interesst in Wayne County junior golf and will help in growing this wonderful game," the WCJAC said in a press statement.
