UMO repeats as Conference Carolinas men's tennis champions

SUMTER, S.C. -- Most Valuable Player and senior Edgar Bub claimed the match-deciding singles point and led University of Mount Olive to its second consecutive Conference Carolinas men's tennis team championship with a 5-0 triumph over Limestone on Sunday afternoon.

Bub earned MVP for the second time in three years as the No. 32-ranked Trojans (18-3) secured their second straight trip to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. Bub was joined on the all-tournament team by Henric Falkenberg and Matt Finnerty, who was named the league's player-of-the-year earlier in the week.

"I'm so proud of this team," said UMO's Kevin Coghill, who receied coach-of-the-year honors for the second straight season. "This is a special group. They're life family and they want to win for each other."

UMO led 3-0 after doubles play.

Finnerty triumphed at No. 1 singles before Bub sealed the outcome with a straight-set decision at No. 2 singles.

The Trojans have compiled a 24-0 record against conference oppositioin during the past two seasons. They shut out all three tournament opponents this weekend.

"The team handled the pressure of being the hunted extremely well," Coghill said. "I think at some point, we'll look back in history and see just how dominant this team has been."

Women's lacrosse

GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Katie McGovern punched in the game-winning goal with 46 seconds left in the second overtime, and University of Mount Olive upended regular-season champ Limestone, 7-6, to win its first-ever Conference Carolinas tournament crown in its third year of existence.

MVP Hannah Knight recorded 13 saves, including two on free position shots within 10 seconds apart in the first OT. Knight, McGovern, Alyssa Fox and Claire Wigler each drew all-tournament recognition.

Limestone's game-winning attempt hit in the crossbar as time expire in the first OT. In the final minute of the second extra season, Wigler gained posssession and found McGovern cutting through the middle of the Saints' defense.

"Claire and I made eye contact and she made the pass to me and I shot it," said McGovern, a two-time, first-team all-CC performer.

Wigler finished with three goals and an assist. Riann Daziel contributed two goals and an assist.

Outdoor track

BANNER ELK -- The University of Mount Olive men's and women's outdoor track and field teams each claimed the 2015 Conference Carolinas championships contested at Lees-McRae College.

On the men's side, the Trojans had seven individual champions -- Aki Kitigawa (10,000-meter run), Nick Greyno (hammer throw, discus), Franz Beyer (javelin), Mike Munoz (3,000 steeplechase), Austin Steagall (1,500 and 5,000) and Jacob Urys (800).

UMO scored 281.5 points as a team.

On the women's side, the Trojans had four conference champions during opening-day action -- including Aerostata Brown (triple jump) and Nicole Poppe (hammer throw).

UMO has won four straight conference championships -- two each in indoor and outdoor track -- over the past two seasons.

Men's lacrosse

GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Defending NCAA DivisionII national champion Limestone captured its seventh straight Conference Carolinas tournament crown -- and 16th overall in program history -- with a 14-5 conquest of the University of Mount Olive.

Tyler Feniello, Luke Morris and Matt Shields respresented the Trojans on the all-tournament team. Goalie Ross Bowman paced the UMO defense with 11 saves and five ground balls.

Jake Duarte supplied two goals.
