Langley Barnes punched in the game-tying goal in regulation and the game winner in extra time as Wayne Country Day overcame a one-goal deficit to topple Freedom Christian, 3-2, on Thursday afternoon.
It was the Chargers' Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A opener.
Taylor Willman got credit for a goal in the first half that deflected off of a Freedom defender. But Freedom responded with two goals -- including one on a penalty kick -- before the end of the half to take a 2-1 lead into the break.
"It was a great effort by the girls tonight," WCDS coach Steven Ellis said. "They showed great character and determination to come back from a ridiculous penalty call. With the injuries we have, the girls worked hard and thoroughly deserved the win and all credit goes to them"
