ROXBORO -- Dennis Mitchell pumped in a team-high 18 points and Rosewood's second-half defense suffocated Roxboro Community, 59-45, in opening-round action of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A boys' basketball playoffs Saturday.

The 17th-seeded Eagles (15-7 overall) travel to top-seeded East Carteret, the 2014 state runner-up, for a second-round game today. Tip-off is 7 p.m.

"We held them to 15 points in the second half," said RHS head coach Daniel Mitchell, whose team picked up its seventh road victory of the season. "I thought we defended them real well."

Zack Barnes added 16 points. Airic Murray and Marquail Al-montaser contributed nine and eight points, respectively.
