PIKEVILLE -- Myleah Jones led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds as Charles B. Aycock defeated Smithfield Selma, 48-30, on Tuesday evening.
The Lady Falcons (14-4 overall) shook off a slow start -- they only had 15 points at halftime -- to pull away from the Spartans. Taylor Daniels was the only other CBA player to score in double figures with 10 points.
Aycock started the game in a man defense, holding SSS to five first-quarter points. They switched into a zone to start the second quarter, and the adjustment backfired.
"I told [the team] at halftime that we'd be going back to the man-to-man," CBA coach Roy Harrell said. "We stayed in it and they had trouble with it. Our defense creates our offense, so that's what we tried to do in the second half."
Diamond Blackston led Smithfield-Selma with 13 points, the only Spartan to score in double figures. The Spartans led by one at half, but their defense couldn't contain Jones in the second.
"You never have to wonder what you're going to get with her," Harrell said of Jones. "Whether it's practice or the game, you know she's going 110 percent all the time."
Aycock visits New Bern on Friday.
