UMO has 14 teams post GPAs of 3.0 or higher

MOUNT OLIVE -- Game.

Set.

Match.

The University of Mount Olive men's and women's tennis teams posted the highest grade-point average during the 2014 semester. The two squads were among a program-best 14 teams to log a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The Trojan men had a 3.689 -- highest among all the teams. Women's tennis was a close second at 3.569.

Standouts Edgar Bub and Stanley Roffe, who play on the men's tennis team, emerged as two of 11 athletes to post a 4.0 GPA overall. Francesca Ceppi, Roxanne Chouinard and Nicole LaChappelle represented women's tennis.

"These teams continue to impress me with their work ethic on and off the court," said UMO head coach and alum Kevin Coghill. "We believe that players who succeed in the classroom will succed on the court. Coach Bert Poole and myself are very proud of this group of student-athletes."

Alyssa Fox (women's lacrosse), Kali Cook-Griseward (women's lacrosse), Courtney McNamara (softball), Beth Overman (softball), Lauren Smith (softball) and Niza Vera (women's soccer) each fashioned a 4.0 GPA in the classroom. McNamara, Overman and Smith have helped guide UMO to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II tournament.

The Trojan softball team had the third-highest GPA of 3.413.

Other teams honored were men's cross country (3.307), men's golf (3.294), women's volleyball (3.279), women's cross country (3.268), women's soccer (3.249), women's outdoor/indoor track (3.224), men's volleyball (3.161), women's lacrosse (3.153), women's basketball (3.142), women's golf (3.098) and men's outdoor/indoor track (3.019).

The fall semester marked the seventh straight semester UMO teams have finished with an overall GPA above 3.0.
