* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro Heat 56, Durham Flight 34 -- The Heat's Gavin Portela knocked down 23 points on 10 of 11 shooting from the floor and picked Durham for four steals. Cam Yarbrough and Joe Rasmussen contributed eight points apiece. Goldsboro (6-4 overall) returns to action Jan. 9, 2015, against Wilmington.

* Boys' basketball: New Bern 40, Charles B. Aycock 30 -- Tayquan Hampton's 10 points weren't enough for Charles B. Aycock in the Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference opener for both teams Tuesday. Michael Evans chipped in seven points for CBA.

Girls basketball: Charles B. Aycock 30, New Bern 29 -- Hannah Vinson scored 16 points as Charles B. Aycock outlasted New Bern in Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference play Tuesday. The Golden Falcons built a 12-2 lead after the first period and held on from there.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro Heat 33, Durham Flight 12 -- Ben Daniels paced Goldsboro's offense with 10 points. Luke Parks contributed eight points and eight rebounds. Benson Jones added eight points and dished out three assists. The Heat (3-5 overall) entertain Wilmington on Jan. 9, 2015.

* Girls' basketball: Rosewood 38, Norwayne 29 -- Braylee Butts led a balancing Eagles' scoring attack with 14 points. Kaitlyn Kincaid chipped in eight points. Ar'zhane Dozier and Rylee Myers pumped in six points apiece. Taylor Smith contributed four points. Rosewood (5-0 overall) is the guest of Greenwood on Thursday.

* Girls' basketball: Dillard 38, Brogden 8 -- Tyana Morrison led all scorers with 12 points, while teammate T'Ziah Kelly knocked down 11. Nalexia Vann logged nine points. Dillard (4-1 overall) plays host to Eastern Wayne on Thursday.
