Boys' basketball

Wayne Country Day 69,

Parrott Academy 65

* KINSTON -- After letting an eight-point halftime lead turn into a seven-point deficit toward the end of the third quarter, Wayne Country Day turned up the defensive pressure during the final eight minutes to beat Parrott Academy, 69-65, on Tuesday evening.

Joel Davis' slam dunk to end the third quarter put the Chargers up by one point. Davis finished with 15 points and seven rebounds.

Jamal Forde led WCDS with 19 points and nine steals. Shahim Muhammed scored 15 points.

The Chargers shot 16 of 31 from the free throw line, which allowed Parrott to hang around.

WCDS (3-2 overall) visits Kestrel Heights next Tuesday.

Rosewood 48,

North Johnston 36

* Dennis Mitchell scored 15 points to lead Rosewood past non-conference foe North Johnston, 48-36, in their season opener on Tuesday.

Zach Barnes chipped in 13 as the only other Eagle in double figures.

Rosewood has a rematch with North Johnston on the road on Tuesday.

South Johnston 53,

Charles B. Aycock 49

* FOUR OAKS -- South Johnston eeked out a four-point win over non-conference opponent Charles B. Aycock on Tuesday, despite a fourth-quarter surge from the Golden Falcons.

CBA scored just 21 points in three quarters of play, but tallied 18 in the final period.

Ian Best scored a season-high 20 points for the Golden Falcons and Jarde Spruill added 11.

C.B. Aycock (0-5 overall) travels to Goldsboro on Tuesday.

Girls' basketball

Charles B. Aycock 62,

South Johnston 37

* FOUR OAKS -- Charles B. Aycock remained unbeaten as they beat South Johnston 62-37 on Tuesday.

Myleah Jones continued to lead the Golden Falcons in scoring as she posted 19 points. Ashley Darden chipped in 13. Tanika "Mookie" Powell and Taylor Daniels both added nine.

The Golden Falcons (5-0 overall) are the guests of county rival Goldsboro on Tuesday.

Parrott Academy 39,

Wayne Country Day 20

* KINSTON -- Lexi Jeffreys scored nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds as WCDS fell to Parrott Academy on Tuesday.

The Chargers (0-5) travel to Kestrel Heights next Wednesday.

JV

* Girls' basketball: CB Aycock 48, South Johnston 26 -- Hannah Vinson scored half her team's points (24) in a 48-26 victory over South Johnston on Tuesday. Destiny Washington finished with nine points and Destiny Washington had eight. The Golden Falcons improved to 3-0 this season.

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 64, Parrott Academy 41 -- DJ Waters led three Wayne Country Day scorers in double figures with 19 points. Marcus Metcalf added 15 and PJ Hill had 12. The Chargers improved to 3-0 and play the Goldsboro Heat on Monday at 6:30.

* Boys' basketball: South Johnston 42, CB Aycock 28 -- Charles B. Aycock was held to just four points in the first half and lost 42-28 to South Johnston on Tuesday. Marquez Farmer led CBA with nine points. The Golden Falcons (0-5) travel to Goldsboro on Tuesday.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Christian 21, Wilson Christian 17 -- Wayne Christian went to an extra period but were able to finish off Wilson Christian 21-17 in overtime. Justin Ashford led the way with nine points. Wayne Christian improved to 2-3 this season and will play Parrott Academy on Monday.

* Girls' basketball: Norwayne 30, Greenwood 8 -- Taylor Gay led Norwayne with 10 points as they downed Greenwood on Tuesday. Ciara Styles and Daelyn Brock combined for 10 points. It was Norwayne's season-opening game.

* Boys' basketball: Greenwood 44, Rosewood 8 -- DeAndre Wright paced the T-Birds' offense with a game-high 14 points. Jamal King chipped in 12 points, while Justin Edwards scored six. Logan Price provided four points for Rosewood. It was the season-opening game for both teams.
