North Duplin scores late to beat Hobbton

NEWTON GROVE -- Emiliano Mora scored the game-winning touchdown on a 1-yard run in the final three minutes, and North Duplin slipped past Hobbton, 30-26, in Carolina 1-A Conference play Friday evening.

Mora finished the game with 77 yards on 13 carries.

Brion Kornegay paced the Rebels' ground attack with 129 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. He added a two-point conversion run in the second quarter. Backfield mate Kaleb Brock racked up 74 yards on 15 totes.

Brock caught Mora's lone pass completion.

Daquan Goodman and Ced Kornegay each scored a TD.

North Duplin (4-6 overall, 1-4 Carolina) concludes regular-season play at home Friday against Spring Creek. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at H.E. Grubbs Field in Calypso.

* WARSAW -- No. 2-ranked James Kenan put the finishing touches on its second consecutive Carolina 1-A Conference championship with a 63-7 romp over Spring Creek at Bill Taylor Field.

Six different Tigers combined for seven rushing touchdowns and 277 yards. Quarterback Ken Avent III emerged as the top ball carrier with 51 yards and a touchdown on just four carries.

JaQuan Williams scored twice. Al Owens, Karon Williams, Josh Boykin and Khalil Savage each found the end zone once.

The Tigers forced four turnovers and Korey Beddingfield blocked a first-quarter punt for safety. Savage returned an interception for a touchdown.

John Brooks eclipsed the 500-yard receiving mark for the season.

Spring Creek managed 37 yards on 36 carries.

James Kenan (9-1 overall, 6-0 Carolina) has a bye week, while Spring Creek concludes regular-season play at North Duplin.

Princeton 50, Lakewood 0

* PRINCETON -- Sophomore Matt Stallworth scored his first touchdown of the season and No. 4-ranked Princeton throttled Carolina 1-A Conference opponent Lakewood 50-0 on Friday.

Johnny Frasier rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries. The school's single-season rushing leader, Frasier has 23 TDs this season.

Quarterback Mike Wooten added a fifth rushing touchdown for the Bulldogs, who racked up 289 yards on the ground as a team.

Cam Jackson caught three passes from Wooten for 60 yards, and picked off Leopards sophomore quarterback Zach Tanner twice. Jackson also recovered a fumble and took it 72 yards.

Princeton (9-1 overall, 4-1 Carolina) is the guest of archrival Rosewood on Friday. The winner gets the league's No. 2 seed for the postseason.

J.H. Rose 55, Southern Wayne 13

* DUDLEY -- Southern played as good as it has all year for the first 18 minutes of the game, but after J.H. Rose started to make plays, the Saints couldn't hang on in a 55-13 loss in Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference play.

"We made a few mistakes and they have the athletes to make you pay and we lost some of our drive after that," SW coach David Lee said.

The Saints' playmakers came alive in the second half as Tyaire Allen scored on a 77-yard run, and Manny Walker took an interception 89 yards to the house.

Until Allen's long run, he had totaled 11 carries for 5 yards. He finished with 82 yards rushing. Walker ran the ball nine times for 72 yards.

Southern Wayne (0-10 overall, 0-5 ECC) conclude regular-season play Friday at county archrival Eastern Wayne. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Little Big Horn.
