8 area runners compete in state cross country championships

KERNERSVILLE -- Spring Creek senior Allen Coor and Princeton's Austin Sullivan placed among the top 60 competitors during the season-ending N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A boys' cross country championships Saturday.
Coor, the 2014 Bill Kemp Invitational champ, ran the 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) course in 18 minutes, 52.59 seconds -- good enough for 56th overall. It was Coor's fourth consecutive appearance in the state meet.
Sullivan finished 41st in 18:31.03.
On the girls' side, North Duplin sophomore Haley Thurston crossed the finish line at 14th place with a time of 21:27.7.
Princeton had four runners -- Altheia Balageo (63rd, 23:38.55), Megan Evans (71st, 24:04.18), Chelsea Hawley (82nd, 24:59.23) and Elizabeth Cole (115th, 27:41.82).
Class 2-A
KERNERSVILLE -- Goldsboro's Nichole Mehlhaff earned a top-50 finish during the 2-A portion of the NCHSAA girls' championship race ran at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex.
Mehlhaff ended up 47th with a time of 22:04.83.
Two weeks earlier, Mehlhaff placed second in the season-ending Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference championship meet.
