Goldsboro overcame an injury to one of its best players, and a mid-game formation change to beat Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference rival Kinston 25-23, 25-20, 19-25, 18-25, 15-11 on Tuesday evening.
Middle hitter Becka Pittard suffered a bruised knee and missed the third and fourth sets. The Cougars changed from their 6-2 system to a 5-1, and Tayzlie Tripple filled Pittard's spot.
Angelina Nacca recorded the first kills of her career, including the final kill on match point.
"She came up to me and was like, 'that was fun,'" head coach TJ Lancaster said. "To throw them into a new system like that, it's like you just want them to play hard. But then they came out in that fifth set and they really took it to them."
Alexus Davis led the team with 13 kills and three blocks. Matti Rose Lyon had 11 assists and five aces. Maddis Jara added five aces as well.
The Cougars (8-3 overall, 1-1 ECC) travel to Ayden-Grifton on Thursday.
