There's still time.

More than 40 slots remain open for the 16th installment of the Wayne County Men's Amateur. The tournament committee has graciously extended the registration deadline to July 10 at 5 p.m. The fee remains $125.

The 54-hole stroke competition begins July 11 at Walnut Creek Country Club. Golfers move to Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course for the second day. Play concludes Sunday at Southern Wayne Country Club.

An estimated 40 percent of the golfers among 12 flights in four divisions will receive prizes.

"It's pretty good for your money, not including the door prizes," tournament committee member Jeremy Joyner said. "And, you get to play three of the best golf courses in Wayne County."

Long-time participant Tim Rose is the reigning Senior Division champion, while John Zambelli has put the last three Super Senior Division trophies on his mantle at home. Zambelli has won five WCMA crowns in two divisions overall.

The Open title is up for grabs this year since two-time defending champ Clark Rose isn't able to participate. Look out for Brad Jones and Brandon Campbell, who placed second and third, respectively, in 2013 to contend for the Open championship.

And the WCMA committee has added a new division -- Masters, for those avid area golfing legends who have reached 70 years old. No, you won't compete against Arnold Palmer or Jack Nicklaus. But you can channel their inner spirits as you work your way around those three challenging courses that test both your mental and physical abilities.

To play, you must either reside in Wayne County or be a member of a golf club located within the county.

Highway 55 Burgers, Shakes & Fries, founded by University of Mount Olive alum Kenny Moore, is the primary sponsor of the three-day tournament.
