Wayne County Fury takes 2nd place

GREENSBORO -- Aaron Smith and Elijah Bryant each flirted with a double-double as the Wayne County Fury 15-Under boys' basketball team dropped a 70-52 decision to Kernersville in the championship game of the USSSA state tournament.

Smith provided 11 points and eight rebounds, while Bryant contributed 10 points and pulled down six boards. Jacob Norris tallied eight points and handed out two assists.

"The guys played hard all weekend," Fury coach Danny Norris said. "I am proud of the team for getting to the championship game. Kernersville was just the better team on that day. Nothing we tried the whole game seemed to work against them."

The Fury opened pool play with a 12-point setback to NC Top Flight from High Point. Malyk Williams pumped in a team-high 16 points and snared four rebounds. Damien Darden supplied 15 points and eight rebounds.

Quentin Carlton registered nine points and three steals. Smith had nine points and four assists.

Wayne County rebounded for a 68-64 win over Triad Defenders of Winston-Salem. Williams logged 15 points and four steals. Eric Agee posted 10 points and five assists. Darden and Norris provided seven points apiece.

The Fury secured the No. 2 seed for championship-round play and dealt the Chatham Cavaliers a 56-48 defeat in the quarterfinals. Williams (three assists) and Carlton (six rebounds) knocked down 12 points apiece.

Norris scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds. Dequon Pigford added eight points and four steals.

Wayne County upended the Defenders, 52-39, in the semifinals. Norris shot 3 of 4 from behind the 3-point arc and finished with 13 points. Pigford contributed nine points and three steals.

Darden, Carlton, Smith and Bryant tallied six points apiece.
