WCDS spring athletes honored

Wayne Country Day concluded its spring sports season with an awards ceremony held in the school gymnasium on Sunday evening.
Athletes garnered recognition in six sports.
Karis Hawkins, who has interviewed with several Ivy League schools, earned the female Scholar Athlete award. Robert Glass claimed the male Scholar Athlete award.
Meredith Roethling, who helped lead the Chargers to the state 1-A girls' dual-team tennis championship last fall, won the female Tom Jones Award -- Fellowship of Christian Athletes/Sportsmanship. Basketball standout Marlon Coley seized the male Tom Jones Award.
Kennedy Dalton and Bailee Creger shared the female Sam Patrick Award (Life-time Athlete), while Miller Gerrard won the male Sam Patrick Award. Gerrard helped guide WCDS to its first-ever CPIC boys' championship last fall and the first-ever trip to the dual-team tennis playoffs this season.
Gerrard and seventh-grader Sam Dively secured spots on the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A All-State team. The Chargers endured a season-ending defeat against eventual state runner-up Statesville Christian on Friday.
Creger, who recorded 10 shutouts in soccer, was named the CPIC girls' player-of-the-year and secured a spot on the 2014 N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A All-State team.

* Baseball: All-CPIC -- John Strickland, Mitch Turnage; honorable mention -- Parker Smith. Senior Award -- Jacob Parks. MVP -- Turnage.
* JV baseball: Most Improved -- DJ Drew. Sportsmanship Award -- Timothy Decatur-Luker.
* Varsity girls' soccer: NCISAA 1-A All-State -- Creger, Margaux Pope. All-CPIC -- Creger (player-of-the-year), Pope, Crawford Tanner, Margaret Tanner. Most Improved -- Jennifer Potts. Team Player Award -- Crawford Tanner. -- Coaches' Award -- Ally Willman. MVP -- Creger.
* JV girls' soccer: Most Improved -- Kendall Myers. Coaches' Award -- Jasmine Jones. MVP -- Hannah Neal.
* Varsity boys' tennis: NCISAA 1-A All-State -- Gerrard and Dively. All-CPIC -- Michael Knutson, Gerrard, Dively; honorable mention -- Preston Edwards. Coaches' Award -- Gerrard. Most Improved -- Edwards. MVP -- Knutson.
* Boys' track: Coach's Award -- Ramel Carpenter.
