Eagles, Chargers compete

* GREENSBORO -- Wayne Christian's Connor Jones concluded his prep career with a trio of top-five finishes during the season-ending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Classes 1-A/2-A track and field championship meet.

A senior, Jones seized fourth place in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 42.25 seconds. He took fifth in both the 800 run (2:07.79) and 3,200 run (10:21.08).

Chandler King placed 13th in the 110 hurdles in 21.34 seconds. Teammate Austin Kornegay shared 27th in the discus with a throw of 85 feet, 101/2 inches.

Wayne Country Day's Jack Zhao crossed the line eighth in 11.95 seconds during the 100 dash. Zhao ran the anchor leg on the Chargers' 800 relay that ended up fourth in 1:38.96 -- 1.14 seconds out of third place behind St. David's of Raleigh.

Joining Zhao were Corey and Ramel Carpenter and David Huang.

On the girls' side, Wayne Christian's Sarah Sawyer took 28th overall in the shot put (20 feet, 6 inches).

Emily Wells captured 16th place in the 100 hurdles with a time of 22.8 seconds. Freshman Holly Gurley ended up 18th in 25.39. Georgia Parnell competed in the preliminaries, but did not advance to the championship heat.

Softball

Princeton 7, South Creek 4

* PRINCETON -- Carolina Conference champion Princeton continued its postseason run with a 7-4 victory over South Creek on Saturday evening.

The Bulldogs (17-4 overall) travel to once-beaten Pinetown Northside on Tuesday for a third-round game in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A playoffs. First pitch is 6 p.m.

Northside (21-1) advanced with an 18-2, mercy-rule victory over Rosewood on Friday evening.

Hailey Wood and Tori Paul combined for a three-hitter and seven walks inside the pitcher's circle. Wood logged four strikeouts in five innings of work, while Paul recorded seven strikeouts in a two-inning stint.

Wood paced the offense with four hits, including a double, and four RBI. Carson Braswell and Lenoir Community College signee Savanna Massengill (RBI) provided two hits apiece.

Charley Cox doubled in four official plate appearances and scored one run. Paul (RBI) and Kortney Edwards each had one hit.

Princeton improved to 10-0 at home this season.
