Tigers' Fullwood places 4th in 200 dash at state meet

GREENSBORO -- James Kenan's T.J. Fullwood just missed a medal in individual competition and the Tigers placed fifth in the 400-meter relay during the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A men's track and field championship meet contested Friday.

Fullwood posted a fourth-place time of 22.76 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Teammate John Brooks claimed ninth in the long jump with a mark of 19 feet, 7 inches.

Rosewood senior Marquail Al-montaser secured eighth in the 110 hurdles in 16.63 seconds. Zach Barnes ended up 16th in the high jump and the Eagles' 1,600 relay placed 11th.

Spring Creek's Martevius Brigham captured sixth overall with a toss of 127 feet, 2 inches in the discus.

Princeton's Martin Bayles wound up sixth in the pole vault. The Bulldogs' Jose Aguillon crossed the line 10th in the 1,600 run, while Earl Gibson secured 11th in the long jump.

On the girls' side, Rosewood's Alysse Atwell recorded the team's best finish -- a fourth-place effort of 50.12 seconds in the 300 hurdles. Mideast regional champ Krystal Yelverton ended up seventh in the 100 hurdles.

Brynna Lee -- the Carolina Conference, Wayne County and Mideast champion -- vaulted to a sixth-place distance in the pole vault. Sophomore Lexi Mercer took 14th in the high jump and Callie Thornton registered 15th in the shot put.

The Eagles wound up among the top 10 in the 800 and 1,600 relays, took 12th in the 3,200 relay and crossed the line 15th in the 400 relay.

Spring Creek's Rachel McCollum seized seventh place in the shot with a distance of 33 feet, 21/2 inches. Teammate Cassidy Goff was 11th in the triple jump (31-6 1/2), while freshman Darrian Mullens finished 12th in the discus with a throw of 77-5.

North Duplin freshman Haley Thurston was eighth in the 800 run.

Princeton's Amber Johnson and Megan Evans turned in top-10 performances during the 3,200 run.
