Staton, Tyler named field events MVPs during ECC 2A track championships

SNOW HILL -- Goldsboro's Da-Vionta Staton and Nickie Tyler earned Most Valuable Player accolades during the season-ending Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference track and field championship meet contested at Greene Central on Wednesday afternoon.

Staton claimed the ECC title in the shot put with a toss of 42 feet, 5 inches. Tyler recorded the top distance in the discus with a throw of 73-2. She placed second in the shot put with a mark of 32-61/2.

Christian Martens secured the ECC championship in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.4 seconds. He also participated on the Cougars' 800 relay, which placed third overall in 1:33.62. Joining Martens were Keyshawn Jenkins, Rasheid Malette and Rayvonne Barnes.

Malette captured the 300 hurdles in 40.79 seconds.

Jacob Seate finished runner-up in the 3,200 run with a time of 11:22.85 and took fourth in the 3,200. Jenkins placed fourth in the 200 dash.

The Cougars' quartet of Victor Prezbindowski, Aaron and Jacob Seate and Caleb Howard claimed third-place honors in the 3,200 relay with a time of 10:26.01.

On the girls' side, Shamonica Artis placed second behind Tyler in the discus. Distance specialist Nicole Mehlhaff claimed runner-up honors in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs. Teammate Grayson Collins placed third in the 3,200.

Nekooshia Kornegay ended up second in the 100 dash. Kornegay, Daja Moore, Alexus Davis and Tyona Moses comprised the 800 relay that placed third in 2:03.72.

Davis, Moore, Mehlhaff and Mercedez Cook posted a third-place time of 5:10.54 in the 1,600 relay.
